Lyrics
Written in the Scars
Verse 1
He was just a boy with a dream in his heart
Filled with ambition from the start
But mirrors can whisper the cruelest lies
When pain is written the skin can’t hide
Marks on his back from abuse he endured
A child’s heart broken and uncured
He’d trace those lines like a map of his pain
And wondered from what he would gain.
Chorus 1
Then Jesus said, “Child, let me show you my scars,
The ones on my back look a lot like yours.
They came from hatred, from lashes and shame,
From people who never believed in my name.
But by these stripes, you can be made whole,
From the wounds and innocence others stole.
Your scars don’t mean you’re forgotten, unloved,
I hear and see you, my beloved.”
Verse 2
Years rolled on and that boy became a man
Put on the uniform, rifle in his hand
For the first time in life he felt ten feet tall
Like he finally belonged, no longer small
But war leaves its mark when the battle is done
A blast in the night stole the light from the sun
A wound to his head and the orders came down
The warrior he once was could no longer be found
He stared in the mirror at the scar on his head
A cruel little line where his dream is now dead
And the silence would whisper, “You didn’t survive,
You’re not who you were… you’re just barely alive.”
Chorus 2
Then Jesus said, “Son, let me show you my scars,
The wounds on my head from a crown made of thorns.
We warriors both walked into battle that day,
Not for ourselves, but to stand in the way.
You are no failure, your mission was true,
You fought for the lives that depended on you.
Dreams don’t die when sacrifice is done,
Sometimes they’re fulfilled when the battle is won.”
Verse 3
That warrior joined the fire house, to make ends meet,
With a quiet resolve to overcome the defeat
Then one fateful night through the sirens and smoke
A desperate cry in the darkness awoke
A child trapped inside where the flames climbed high
He didn’t hesitate, didn’t question why
He carried her out through the burning red glow
While the fire carved scars in the palms he would show
Later he stared at those hands in the light
Skin burned and broken from that fiery night
And he whispered again with a trembling breath
“Who could love hands that have danced with death?”
Final Chorus
Then Jesus said, “Look at the scars in my hands,
The nails where I carried the world’s demands.
I walked through the fire of judgment and hell,
To rescue the souls who in darkness once fell.
Your scars are not ugly, they’re stories of grace,
Of standing for others and taking their place.
The wounds that you carry are love’s sacred sign,
A reflection of sacrifice… just like mine.”
Outro / Bridge (soft, reflective)
So when you see scars in the mirror of pain
Don’t hide them in shame or wish them away
They’re proof of the battles where love chose to stand
When courage stepped forward and mercy held hands
For beauty is born where the broken hearts start
Where service and sacrifice carve out a heart
And heaven still echoes the words once said—
“No greater love has a man,”
Than to lay down his life for a friend.
Sometimes the proof…
Is written in scars.
